Just outside the Las Vegas area, on the way south toward Searchlight and Laughlin, there is a turnoff to the East that will lead you out to Nelson Ghost Town. This historic little gathering of buildings and automobiles from decades past has a rich and storied history in the Old West.
Spanish Explorers originally found gold deposits in the valley in 1775, and called the area "Eldorado," after the mythical lost city of gold in South America. Over the next century, the valley was taken over by pioneers and miners who were making their way west toward California, or coming from California to search for gold and precious metals.
There is quite a bit of violence in Nelson's past, from the violent claim jumping battles at the Techatticup Mine, to the Civil War deserters that hid there from the war, to the Native American outlaws that grew up in the area and left their mark in violence and murder.
That makes it all the more ironic that it has become a premier wedding spot for the Las Vegas area. It's rustic buildings and vehicles create a stunning contrast to the beauty of love and the romance of the wedding celebration. Nelson Ghost Town has, in a way, been redeemed by it's embrace of love after the decades of violence it was born into.
Now, all that is left is the beauty of the surrounding desert, and the images of a time that has passed us by. With around ten rustic buildings and dozens of vintage autos, Nelson is an eclectic combination of several decades of history. It has been used as a filming site for 3000 to Graceland, as well as Breakdown, both starring Kurt Russell. There is still a wrecked plane prop used from the movies that you can see and enjoy!
Nelson Ghost Town provides for one of the most scenic wedding locations around Las Vegas. Not everyone knows it's here, but for those of us who do, it is a gem worth finding and incorporating into your big day. There is beauty in Nelson unlike any other place, and it can help you make a lifetime memory on your special day!
